Electrical Panel Upgrades for Essex County Homes

An electrical panel upgrade is the foundation of every home electrification project — adding an EV charger, installing a heat pump, going solar, replacing a dangerous Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel, or simply future-proofing an older 100A service. 1. 100A to 200A Service Upgrade

The most common panel upgrade in Essex County is the 100A-to-200A service upgrade. Older colonial and cape homes in Salem, Marblehead, and Danvers were built with 100-amp service that's no longer adequate for modern loads — electric ranges, electric dryers, central air, Level 2 EV chargers, and heat pumps all push the total home demand past what 100A can supply safely. We coordinate the utility disconnect/reconnect with Eversource / National Grid / Unitil, pull the wiring permit, install the new 200A panel and breakers, and pass the local inspection — typically in a single day on site.

2. Federal Pacific / Zinsco Hazard Replacement

Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco breaker panels were widely installed in Massachusetts homes from the 1950s through the early 1980s and have been documented as fire and shock hazards — breakers fail to trip on overload, and bus bars have been known to burn. Most home insurance carriers now flag or refuse coverage on homes with these panels, and they frequently block conventional financing at sale. We remove the entire hazardous panel and breakers, replace it with a modern 200A panel with copper bus, and re-terminate every circuit to current code.

3. Sub-Panel Installation for Additions & Detached Structures

Adding a detached garage, an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), or finishing a basement often requires a sub-panel: a smaller secondary panel fed from your main 200A panel via a properly sized breaker and conductor run. Sub-panels need to be wired correctly — neutral and ground must be separated in the sub-panel, the feeder breaker is sized to protect the feeder wire, and the local inspector verifies clearances and labeling. We install sub-panels rated for 60A, 100A, or 125A depending on what's fed from them.

4. 200A to 400A Heavy Service for EV + Heat Pump + Solar

When you're stacking electrification — a Level 2 EV charger (50A), a heat pump with electric backup (60A), an electric range (50A), plus solar — a 200A panel often runs out of headroom. The fix is a 200A-to-400A service upgrade: larger utility service entrance cable, a 400A meter base, and either a single 400A panel or a pair of 200A panels with a main breaker / transfer switch arrangement. Heavy-service upgrades are most common now in newer homes in Peabody, North Andover, and Boxford where homeowners are going all-electric on heating and transportation simultaneously.

5. Circuit Additions for Electrification

Sometimes you don't need a full panel upgrade — you just need new 240V circuits added for an EV charger, heat pump, electric range, induction cooktop, or hot tub. If your 200A panel has open breaker slots and the load calculation shows capacity, we add the new circuit directly. If the panel is full, we install a sub-panel or tandem breakers where code allows. Every circuit addition starts with a load calculation — we don't add circuits blindly because an over-panel is an inspection failure and a fire hazard.

6. Smart Panel Swap-Out (Span, Leviton, Enphase)

Smart panels (Span, Leviton Smart Load Center, Enphase IQ Combiner) replace a traditional 200A panel with a controllable, monitored alternative — every circuit becomes individually controllable from a phone app, with circuit-level energy monitoring and the ability to shed non-essential loads during a power event or to manage solar + battery without a separate transfer switch. Smart panel swap-outs are increasingly popular in solar-with-battery homes where the homeowner wants circuit-level visibility and dynamic load management.
